The MAH-Sters have gone on another driving holiday with their good friends, the Tan Family and the Lim Family. As usual, we makan everywhere we went! Watch out for the food critics!
We left Singapore for Malacca last night, to break the long and tedious journey up to Ipoh today. When we got to Malacca at about 11pm, we headed straight for supper. The fish and frog porridge which we ordered were yum yum. The frog porridge is very different from the ones we have here in Singapore. This 1 in Malacca doesn't come with the thick brown gravy. Just plain white porridge with generous amounts of frog's legs. Very tasty....which = lots of MSG!
We met up with the Tan Family, who were already in Malacca, this morning while we were having brekkie at Da Gu Wanton Mee. We had initially planned to eat at another Wanton Mee stall but it wasn't open. Da Gu is a little too oily for our liking. But as the hokkien saying goes : no fish, prawn also good lah.
The drive up to Ipoh was really long. We left at about 10 and got there at about 1plus. Boy! Were we hungry!
Reached Ipoh, went straight to the coffeeshop in Ipoh Old Town where we had Popiah, Ipoh Hor Fun, Rojak, Cuttlefish with Eng Chai and Kai See Noodles. Those taking orders were really aggressive. They were already hounding us for our orders even when we hadn't found a table! The popiah stall was worse! The Ah Por brought 2 popiahs to us even though we didn't order them! What good service huh? Hahaha....we took it anyway since we're going to order it. But had her change 1 to no chili.
After lunch, we went to the tackle shop to get some fishing necessities then went on to make a table reservations at Mun Zhong (Pusing) for our dinner that night. We had to book a table as Mun Zhong is always very full and we didn't want to have to be turned away.
Right after checking in to Clearwater Sanctuary, the guys whipped out their rods and headed straight to the clear water lake. The kids rented bicycles (which are free for in house guests for 2 hours!) while the ladies sat down to chat.
MAH-Let posing for a picture at the lake while Nicole dug for earth worms for Alice (with MAH-Let's rod)
Jimmy with the PB before releasing it back to the lake. Apprently, the guys realised that this huge PB was actually protecting its young from their prey. Sorry big guy. Didn't mean to disturb you.
In the evening, we went to Mun Zhong (Pusing) for our dinner. On our table, there was :
1. Har Lok (Prawn). It's prawns fried with garlic in oil and soya sauce. Very salty as these were sea-water prawns but very yummy. This is 1 of Mun Zhong's specialty dishes.
2. An extremely large pomfret which was fried on 1 side and steamed on the other. Very unique and tasted wonderful. It came in cantonese styled steamed sauces and ginger.
3. Salted fish with pork belly in claypot - MAH-Tai's favourite. This dish never fails to remind MAH-Tai of grandma's pork belly dish. It only has pork belly, salted fish and lap cheong (chinese sausage) and this alone, can make MAH-Tai melt whenever a piece of pork belly is in the mouth. Hope I can finally find the recipe to this and make this myself 1 day!
4. A simple chye sim sauteed with garlic.
5. King To pork ribs - like sweet and sour style
6. Fried chicken bits. This 1, not that fabulous. It's like chicken pops. This is the only dish which we didn't clear. Jimmy took it back to the hotel and wiped them out later.
The portions were huge and we all ate till we couldn't move! The bill only came up to RM$270! Convert that to Singapore dollars...only about $120! Oh man! We'll never find such bills in Singapore with such great food! As the MAH-Sters had been wanting to give our friends a treat, so the MAH-Sters footed this bill.
After dinner, we went to check out the beancurd stall. But it was closed :( Too bad, MAH-Tai, you have to come again tomorrow.
